UFC on ESPN 15 video: Jordan Wright bloodies Ike Villanueva with barrage of strikes to get first-round finish

Jordan Wright made the most of his short notice opportunity at UFC on ESPN 15 after bombarding Ike Villanueva with strikes in the opening round.

The former Contender Series veteran uncorked a highlight reel spinning heel kick during the first exchange and that ultimately set the tone for his show-stopping performance. After clipping Villanueva with that kick, Wright went on the attack with a brutal series of knee strikes from inside the clinch.

As Villanueva desperately tried to break Wright’s grip, a stream of blood began flowing down his body and onto the canvas. When the fighters finally broke from that position, the referee paused the action to take a look at the gruesome cut that was opened on Villanueva’s face as a result of one of those knees from Wright.

The doctor only needed a brief moment to see the cut was only going to get worse with each passing minute and he decided to stop the fight before any more damage was done.

The end came at 1:31 in the opening round.

“I’m a master of all ranges,” Wright said about his dominant showing in his UFC debut. “Whether it was out in the open or in the clinch, I knew that I had him.”

After falling short in his bid to earn a UFC contract on the Contender Series, Wright certainly earned his way onto the roster with his performance on Saturday night. Now he’ll look to make an even bigger impact at 185 pounds after accepting this matchup at light heavyweight.
