UFC 251 live blog: Amanda Ribas vs. Paige VanZant

This is the UFC 251 live blog for Amanda Ribas vs. Paige VanZant, a flyweight main card bout on Saturday’s fight card at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

VanZant returns after another injury layoff due to ongoing complications from a broken arm suffered in 2018 during a fight with Jessica-Rose Clark. Most recently, she submitted Rachael Ostovich at UFC on ESPN 1. Ribas is four months removed from her third consecutive UFC win, a decision over Randa Markos.

Round 1: Ribas takes the center of the cage to get things started and immediately she starts cutting off the cage and crowing VanZant. After a few strikes, the two women clinch and Ribas scores a head-and-arm throw. Now Ribas is in scarf position against the fence and VanZant is bleeding. Actually, it may be Ribas who is bleeding from the nose and onto VanZant. VanZant is attempting to escape out the back door but Ribas transitions to an armbar attempt very smoothly. It’s locked up tight and VanZant is now on top, trying to defend her arm. Ribas adjusts and rolls to belly down and that armbar is DEEP! VanZant tries to fight it off but is forced to tap!

OFFICIAL DECISION: Amanda Ribas submits Paige VanZant with an armbar at 2:21 of round one.
