With a middleweight championship bout between Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum shelved at the last minute, Adesanya and Silva were moved to the UFC 234 main event. It was hyped as a meeting between the future and a legend, and after three rounds of stylish striking, the rising Adesanya walked out with the win.

Adesanya went on to defeat Gastelum for an interim title in his next outing before finishing Whittaker at UFC 243 to become the undisputed UFC middleweight champion.
